Honourable Company of Gloucester

The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire

The Honourable Company makes regular charitable awards and grants as part of our support for our heritage, the arts, sport, community service, business and the armed forces across the county. These are funded through the generosity of our members, who also give freely of their time to support our wider objectives, not least meeting the needs of young people across the county. Since its formation in December 2007, the Honourable Company has made grants and awards of over £143,000.

The Honourable Company also initiated the highly successful Schools’ Christmas Science Lecture series, which is aimed at stimulating young children’s interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The lectures are open to all schools across the county and are funded by sponsorship secured through the efforts of a past warden so that there is no charge to those attending. But it is not just for this reason that the lectures have proved so popular, see more here.

The county has its share of disadvantaged families too, so the Company and its members give both time and money to various schemes targeted at helping deprived sections of the community such as the Gloucestershire Bike Project, the Aston Project, Cirencester Housing for Young People and the Pied Piper Trust.

From the outset the Honourable Company has recognised the outstanding service to the community of the armed forces, reservists and cadets and makes annual awards to both individual cadets and to units who have made exceptional contributions to their local communities. The Company also sponsors awards to outstanding young athletes through the Gloucestershire Playing Fields Association. Further details of the most recent awards are below.

2017 Sports Awards

Under a 5-year sponsorship scheme with the Gloucestershire Playing Fields Association (GPFA), initiated in 2012 and renewed in 2017, the Honourable Company normally makes four awards to outstanding young sportsmen and sportswomen each year; each is worth £250. To recognise the Honourable Company's 10th anniversary, and also the exceptional qualities of the 2017 nominees, six rather than the usual four awards were presented at the GPFA AGM on Tuesday 10 October.  There's more on these sporting stars in the Sports Group section here.

The picture above shows the Warden, Air Marshal Sir Dusty Miller, flanked by the 6 sports award recipients: from left to right, Georgia Martin (Rowing), Oliver Harper (Hockey), Joel Townley (Triple Jump), Grace Chappell (Archery), Oscar Powell (Mountain Biking), Regina Ristic-North (Tennis). On the right is Nick Broady, Chairman of the Sports Group.

To illustrate something of what these awards mean to the recipients, here’s what Oscar Powell subsequently wrote to Kay Lillington, Secretary/Advice Officer, Gloucestershire Playing Fields Association. Any member considering taking up mountain biking should beware...

‘I would like to (belatedly) thank you and your team for nominating me for the playing fields award. It was a pleasure to receive the award and the money certainly was very useful. I used it to buy a new helmet, replacing the one I broke in the crash which also broke my hand. I also bought a Reilly coat to brave the winter months which, without your help, I would have had to go without.

‘I would like to thank you for all the hard work you have put into these awards, they truly do make a difference to young sports people across the county.’
